"Listen! God is Calling" Be prepared for surprises, God's calling
doesn't always make sense by our cultural or societal standards, but
God's call always brings life. May you be open to God's surprising word
in all that you do. "Say, Yes."
The purpose statement for the Women of The ELCA is as follows:
"As a community of women created in the image of God, called to
discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, WE
commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one
another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote
healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and world."

PROJECTS
Central African Republic
Carolyn Jacobs from Christ the King in Houston and Pastor Steven Cauley, Associate Pastor at Advent, together
with four North Dakota Lutherans just returned from a trip to the Central African Republic Feb. 13 to 28. The group
attended the dedication of the Women's Center on Feb. 20 which our synod supported. This was the only new
construction that has taken place in the past 15 years. Pastor Cauley preached at the service in Garoua Boulai in
Cameron and Carolyn translated his message into French. They also attended a Lutheran Women's Conference,
visited a village school sponsored by the Lutheran Church in C.A.R., visited an HIV/AIDS clinic, the seminary and
Bible School of the EELRCA, the State Hospital, and a water project. The group took albs and stoles for the twelve
new seminary graduates.
St. Matthew will have door offerings for the Central African Republic on April 13 and May 4. We will request $400 in
matching funds from Thrivent. Last year we were able to send $536 for the village education project. The
Lutheran Church in C.A.R. knows that without schools there is little hope for their future. We are anxious to hear
how this project is doing despite the civil unrest in the country.
Our two missionary families in the Central African Republic are the Graues, originally missionaries in New Guinea,
and the Troesters. There are 450 Lutheran congregations with 71 pastors, 44 evangelists, and 205 trained
catechists.
Peru
A number of years ago the Women of St. Matthew acted as host to a woman president of the Lutheran Church in
Peru, Gladis Arbaiza. Interest in our Companion Synod in Peru led our women to adopt a child from the Emanuel
congregation in Lima so that child could benefit from Day Care at the church. Since then we've sponsored two girls
with uniforms, books, so they can attend the public school, and last year we provided for a technical student,
Anthony Franco. Since school starts in Peru in March, our offerings were always a little late. This year we will take
door offerings for students in the fall, September and October so that children will know in advance that they can
attend the following March.
More than twenty people representing 9 different churches from our Synod will be traveling to Peru July 28 - August
3 for a Festival that started several years ago as a Bible School. See www.globalmissiongulfcoast.org for more
information.
Lutheran World Relief
St. Matthew women have quilted for Lutheran World Relief for many years. On March 9, there will be a blessing of
the quilts before they are shipped the Monday after Easter. The women meet once a month (usually the fourth
Tuesday) to assemble, hem, and tack quilts to be shipped by LWR any place in the world where there is great
need. Health kits and school kits will also be sent.
Thankoffering
Women of St. Matthew participate in a yearly Thankoffering service in November. Boxes are available to use as
reminders at home on a daily basis. This entire gift goes to the National office to promote national concerns.
ACTIVITIES
Regular monthly Bible Study is now on the second Sunday of the month at 9:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall. The
current study is on the Beatitudes. Women are encouraged to subscribe to "Lutheran Woman Today" for the Bible
Study Guide and related articles. $12 for 10 issues. Call 800-328-4648.
Those who wish may choose to have a secret prayer pal. See Patsy Schroeder if you are interested. Remember
your pal in prayer throughout the year. Cards may be sent for special occasions. Prayer pals are revealed in a
party near Valentine's Day.
A birthday party is held for the residents of one of our local nursing homes. This year it will be Monday, April 7 at
Brenham Rest Home. Contact Sandy Wodrich to volunteer.
All women from confirmation age up are encouraged to support each other in our calling as Christians. You are
invited to participate through the Sunday School, Council, and Altar Guild.
