125th Anniversary Celebration
May 21, 2017
St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Sandy Hill celebrated its 125th Anniversary on Sunday morning, May 21, 2017. The festivities began with a communion service at 9 AM, attended by at least 162 persons. Former pastor, Rev. Leon Knitt (1962 to 1965) served as the scripture reader, and the current Rev. Kris Brower led the worship service, preached on the text John 14:15-20, and presided at Holy Communion.
Assisting with the continuous distribution of the communion elements were Rev. Tim Christ (Dean of the NALC´s South Texas Mission District), Rev. Bryce Formwalt (LCMC´s Director of Mission Growth, Texas District), Rev. John Schwartz (retired, and son of St. Matthew), and Rev. Leon Knitt (former pastor at St. Matthew).
Following the worship service, Congregation President, Jim Studhalter opened the celebration program by thanking the very long list of congregants who volunteered many hours each in preparing for this special day. For fear of leaving anyone out, we chose not to list the army of volunteers.
Mr. Stanley Sommer presented an account of the numerous events and changes that had taken place in the past 25 years.
Then, in turn, was heard memories and comments from Rev. John Schwartz, Rev. Leon Knitt, an email from Rev. Bill Norman, Mrs. Rudy Kelling (widow of former Pastor Kelling), Rev. Bryce Formwalt, and Rev. Tim Christ. Each was limited to 5 minutes, and, believe it or not, they stuck to the schedule.
The program portion of our celebration was concluded by the showing of a new video produced by member Lance Jahnke President of 10X Graphics & Marketing, LLC. You may view the video by clicking on the button below:
The program was followed by an excellent meal provided by Tommy Lara Catering! Over 200 persons were on hand to share in fellowship and the meal, which was served in the Parish Hall and under tents on the front lawn. Some even chose to eat in the various rooms in the education wing.
Anecdotal reports from the visitors, former members, and current members were unanimously words of praise for a wonderful worship service, celebration program and an excellent meal!
Photographer, Mr. Michael Kelling was on hand to document the event, and, with his permission, many of his photos follow:
